Yesterday marked the beginning of the holiest month (according to the majority belief) in this country. Over the course of this month our friends and neighbors will fast from sunup to sundown and abstain from other worldly pleasures as a sign of their submission to God and in the hopes of earning His favor. Because of the nature of their fast, most families eat 2 and sometimes 3 meals between sundown and sunup. The first is their "breaking fast" meal. Then they may eat again around midnight. Then breakfast is served super early in the morning to provide some nourishment for the rest of the day. Well, in order for no one to miss this early morning breakfast, there is a unique wake up call given around the city. We, for the past two mornings, have been exposed to this wake up call and wonder if any of you might be interested in something similar.
Around 3:30 in the morning, a man with a drum walks the streets of our neighborhood beating out an interesting little rhythm. There is no singing, no shouting, only drum beating.
If any of you is interested in a wake-up call like that please let us know. We'll try to get something worked out for your neighborhood so you at least won't miss the sunrise!
All joking aside, this is a very serious month for our friends and neighbors. We are trying to learn as much as possible about the significance of each tradition. If you have any questions about this month-long fast/celebration, please send them our way! We'll do our best to teach you as we learn.
